Police Inspector denied bail amid ongoing appeal process

By Belize Live News Staff: Inspector Christopher Martinez, currently serving a five-month sentence for wounding, was denied bail last Friday. His attorney, Hubert Elrington, requested a stay of execution on the sentence, arguing that Martinez’s appeal should be heard before he completes his sentence. However, the Chief Magistrate rejected the request, asserting that the appeal process could still be completed within the remaining time.

Elrington expressed his disappointment, stating that the decision undermines his client’s legal rights. He intends to take the case to the High Court. Martinez has already served nearly two months of his sentence, and reports indicate that 16 other police officers are also facing sentencing or awaiting trial.
