Belize strengthens defense ties at XVI Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s delegation, led by Florencio Marin Jr., Minister of National Defence and Border Security, recently returned from the XVI Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas (CDMA) held in Mendoza, Argentina. Joining him were Oscar Mira, Minister of State; Colonel Anthony Velasquez, Deputy Commander of the Belize Defence Force; and Lieutenant Commandant Alma Pinelo, Acting Vice Commandant of the Belize Coast Guard.

The CDMA, the leading defense forum in the Western Hemisphere, brings together top national security and defense officials every two years to address regional challenges and enhance cooperation. The 2024 conference, which took place from October 13 to 16, focused on two critical topics: the responsible use of artificial intelligence in defense and the impact of climate and environmental issues on national security.

Representatives from 23 countries gathered to exchange ideas and strengthen regional security partnerships. Belize’s delegation actively participated in discussions, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to advancing cooperation for peace, security, and mutual support.

Minister Marin Jr. reaffirmed Belize’s dedication to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, a resolution that promotes the involvement of women in peace processes and national security. Belize highlighted the ongoing efforts to increase women’s participation in the Belize Armed Forces, showcasing the country’s commitment to gender equality in defense.

The Belize delegation also focused on the importance of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, particularly in the context of environmental protection as a key pillar of national security. Belize’s stance on climate-related security threats resonated throughout the forum, as regional defense officials recognized the growing need to incorporate environmental issues into defense strategies.

In addition, Belize emphasized its resolve to tackle transnational organized crime, an ongoing challenge in the region. The delegation underscored the need for collaboration with regional partners, modernizing defense capabilities through technology, and strengthening ties with CARICOM and the Organization of American States (OAS) to enhance security across the Americas.

Belize’s participation in the XVI CDMA reinforces the nation’s commitment to fostering peace, security, and cooperation in the Western Hemisphere. Through these efforts, Belize continues to play a key role in regional defense and security initiatives.
