Weather system poses serious flooding risks across Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: As Tropical Storm Nadine approaches Belize, residents are being urged to prepare for potential flooding across various regions of the country. While no flash flood advisories have been issued yet, experts warn that the situation could quickly escalate, especially with the forecasted heavy rainfall expected to persist over the next few days.

Chief Hydrologist Tennielle Hendy has provided updates on the evolving weather conditions, emphasizing the elevated river levels currently observed across Belize. “In the north, central, and southern regions, we are seeing the same pattern. What is concerning now is the significant soil moisture, especially in the west, near the Maya Mountains and along the coast,” Hendy said.

Hendy also highlighted that the risks of landslides remain low at the moment, as landslide activity is directly influenced by rainfall intensity and where it is concentrated. “We don’t see any landslide risks right now, but this could change depending on rainfall patterns in the coming hours,” she added.

While the immediate threat of flash flooding remains low, the weekend forecast suggests that the potential for flash floods could increase within the next 24 to 36 hours. The rivers most vulnerable to flooding include the Rio Hondo, New River, and sections of the Belize River.

Hendy warned that even modest rainfall over the next three days could pose a flooding risk for some areas, especially Belize City. “With intense rain over just a short period, we could face urban flooding,” she explained, adding that riverine flooding could further complicate the situation in some regions.

As Nadine continues to approach, residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take precautions. The Ministry of Natural Resources has also issued warnings about excessive rainfall, urging everyone to prepare for potential flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.

Belize Live News will continue to provide the latest updates on Tropical Storm Nadine and other weather advisories affecting the country. Stay informed and take necessary measures to ensure safety in the coming days.
