Belize considers sugar price adjustment to deter contraband trade

Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI) is taking steps to ensure that Belizeans have access to an ample supply of sugar, amidst concerns about alleged smuggling and rising prices.

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize is considering a sugar price increase in a bid to curb smuggling activities across the Mexican and Guatemalan borders, Prime Minister John Briceño announced. The government hopes the price adjustment will remove the economic incentives for smugglers, helping to stabilize the domestic sugar market.

“The reality is that our sugar is being smuggled into Mexico and Guatemala because it is too cheap,” Briceño said. “We are essentially selling it at a loss right now, which fuels the contraband trade.”

The government is discussing raising prices incrementally to discourage smugglers, ensuring more sugar remains available on Belizean shelves. Briceño noted that stricter packaging regulations are also under consideration. “The idea is to package the sugar in a way that limits illegal bulk sales. It’s harder to smuggle when it’s bagged and sold properly,” he added.

Briceño emphasized the difficulties of intercepting contraband once it crosses the border. “Once it leaves Belize, it’s hard to stop. Smugglers get through with full truckloads of sugar, and we have limited ability to act beyond our borders.”

Despite the potential public backlash against higher prices, Briceño argued that the adjustment is necessary. “We can’t leave things as they are. If we run out of sugar, it will become a national issue,” he warned. The Prime Minister acknowledged the inflationary pressures facing Belizeans but stressed the need to find a balance. “The price has to reflect economic realities, as other countries around the world are dealing with similar challenges.”
