Belize prepares for showers as Atlantic storms Leslie and Kirk strengthen

By Belize Live News Staff: The National Meteorological Service of Belize is forecasting scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms today and tonight, as residents in inland areas brace for afternoon rainfall, while coastal and southern regions anticipate evening storms.

While local weather patterns are the immediate concern, attention has shifted to the Atlantic, where Tropical Storm Leslie and Hurricane Kirk continue to gain strength.

Tropical Storm Leslie is located roughly 515 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, moving westward with sustained winds of 40 mph. Though Leslie does not pose an immediate threat to Belize, authorities are monitoring its development closely over the next few days.

Of greater concern is Hurricane Kirk, currently generating winds of 120 mph as it moves northwest. The storm is located 1,185 miles east-northeast of the Lesser Antilles. While the storm’s exact trajectory remains uncertain, the National Meteorological Service is advising the public to stay vigilant for any updates.

The forecast for today calls for cloudy periods with temperatures peaking at 90°F (32°C) along the coast and 94°F (34°C) inland. By nightfall, temperatures will cool to 83°F (28°C) on the coast and 73°F (23°C) inland. Mariners should expect calm sea conditions with light winds and wave heights between 1 and 3 feet.

Friday’s forecast predicts similar conditions, with chances of more showers and thunderstorms persisting through the night.

The National Meteorological Service will continue tracking the developments of both Tropical Storm Leslie and Hurricane Kirk. Residents are encouraged to remain informed through official weather bulletins and local news outlets for the latest advisories.
