Belize’s oldest living man, Gilbert Winston “Bertie” Ellis, celebrates 108th birthday

By Belize Live News Staff: Gilbert Winston Ellis, fondly known as “Bertie,” celebrated his 108th birthday today, making him the oldest living man in Belize. Born on September 24, 1916, Ellis has lived through more than a century of Belizean history and continues to be an active member of the community.

Earlier this month, Ellis was honored for his lifelong contributions to Belize at the Tribute to Belizean Patriots. Despite his advanced age, Ellis remains in good health and high spirits, attributing his longevity to a simple lifestyle. “I eat the normal food,” he said, noting that he has no special dietary habits.

Ellis’s early life was defined by his love for sports, particularly cricket, where he excelled both as a batter and bowler. He captained the Rovers cricket team from 1938 and later joined Sussex. Beyond cricket, Ellis served as the first president of the Amateur Boxing Association and was later inducted into the Cricket Hall of Fame. Even after retiring from active sports, he continued to support local athletic initiatives and was a respected figure in sports management.

Now living independently in Belize City, Ellis is known for his routine of playing dominoes three times a week, maintaining an active and social lifestyle. His daughter, Gloria Ellis, described him as a fiercely independent man who still manages his daily affairs.

Ellis’s remarkable life, spanning 108 years, reflects his resilience and dedication to his community, making him a beloved figure in Belizean society.
