Belize City E-buses generate $33K in fares, signaling profitable future

Belize City's e-buses a hit despite higher fares and fewer stops

By Belize Live News Staff:  The Belize City Council’s pilot program for electric buses (e-buses) is proving to be a resounding success, raking in over $33,000 in fares from July 22nd to August 25th. The two e-buses operating in the city have been embraced by a diverse range of passengers, with 18% being senior citizens, 17% students, and 65% regular commuters.

Mayor Bernard Wagner is thrilled with the results of the pilot phase, stating that the collected data will be instrumental in securing funding to expand the e-bus fleet. He also anticipates a surge in ridership with the start of the new school year and acknowledges the public’s demand for expanded e-bus routes.

Mayor Wagner stressed the need to embrace innovation and technology in the transportation sector, drawing parallels between the current fleet of outdated buses and obsolete technologies like cassette tapes. He firmly believes that the transition to e-buses is not just desirable but essential, echoing the sentiment of the Belizean people who are demanding a transformation in the transportation industry.

As the Belize City Council continues to monitor the positive reception of the e-buses and their promising revenue potential, it’s clear that the move towards sustainable and modern public transportation is gaining significant traction in Belize City.
