Belize launches National Accreditation Council: A long-awaited safeguard for education quality

By Belize Live News Staff: After a delay of nearly two decades, Belize has finally launched its National Accreditation Council. This vital institution, first conceived 18 years ago, is now operational to ensure the quality and legitimacy of educational institutions and programs within the country.

The need for such a council has become even more pressing with the rise of online learning, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. As Education Minister Francis Fonseca pointed out, the surge in online courses has also brought with it a wave of unaccredited and potentially fraudulent institutions.

The council will play a crucial role in safeguarding students and the education system. Its responsibilities include registering and accrediting institutions, validating courses, and advising on the recognition of foreign institutions. This will help students make informed decisions about their education and protect them from investing time and money in worthless degrees.

The launch also emphasized the government’s commitment to higher education as a key driver of sustainable development. Minister of State Louis Zabaneh highlighted the importance of accreditation in strengthening institutions and ensuring they meet international standards.
