By Belize Live News Staff: Ambassador Alexis Rosado has officially resigned from his position as Co-Agent for Belize in its cases before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), effective Monday, October 26, 2026.
The Government of Belize confirmed his resignation in an official press release issued Monday evening.
Rosado’s departure comes amid criminal proceedings before the Belizean courts involving allegations of sexual offences against a minor.
The Government acknowledged the ongoing proceedings but emphasized that Rosado remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.
“Mr. Rosado is facing criminal proceedings before the courts of Belize and is entitled to the presumption of innocence,” the official statement said.
The Government added that it would make no further comment on the matter out of respect for the judicial process and everyone involved.
Rosado’s resignation follows mounting public debate over his continued involvement in Belize’s ICJ cases, including calls from Opposition Leader Tracy Panton for him to voluntarily step aside.
Despite the departure, the Government assured Belizeans that preparations for the country’s international legal cases will continue uninterrupted.
According to the statement, Belize’s written submissions have already been filed, and the Government remains confident that the cases will continue to be presented with the necessary preparation and continuity.
Ambassador Assad Shoman, Belize’s Agent before the ICJ, will continue leading the legal team.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to defending Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity through peaceful means and international law.
Rosado’s resignation does not constitute a finding of criminal guilt, and the proceedings against him remain before the courts.
