By Belize Live News Staff: The Institute of Archaeology of the National Institute of Culture and History (IA/NICH) has issued an update on the status of the country’s archaeological reserves.
As of Monday morning, October 19, the Nohoch Che’en and Barton Creek Archaeological Reserves remain closed until further notice.
The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Archaeological Reserve, which was closed on Sunday due to high river levels, has reopened. All other archaeological reserves across the country are also open.
The Institute is urging tour operators and tour guides to take extra care, particularly when conducting water based tours.
The closures follow several days of heavy rain across Belize, which pushed up river levels in parts of Cayo.
NICH says it is monitoring the situation closely and will share further updates as conditions change.
