By Belize Live News Staff: The Institute of Archaeology of the National Institute of Culture and History (IA/NICH) has closed two popular cave sites due to rising rivers.
In a notice issued at 6:20am on Sunday, October 18, the IA/NICH said the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) and Barton Creek Archaeological Reserves are closed for visits because of elevated river levels.
All water related tour activities at the Nohoch Che’en Archaeological Reserve have also been suspended.
The Institute says all other archaeological reserves across the country remain open to visitors.
The IA/NICH is continuing to monitor the situation and will issue updates as conditions change.
The closures follow several days of heavy rainfall, with the National Meteorological Service warning of up to 2 to 4 inches of rain in some areas.
Visitors and tour operators are encouraged to check for updates before travelling to the sites.
