By Belize Live News Staff: For years, businesses at Secret Beach have relied on generators to keep the lights on. That is about to change.
Belize Electricity Limited and the Belize Tourism Board are joining forces to bring electricity to the Ambergris Caye hotspot, which has become a must visit destination for tourists and locals alike.
The project is expected to deliver everyday benefits. Restaurants and bars will be able to safely extend their hours into the evening. Better lighting will improve visibility and safety for workers and visitors. And businesses will save money by cutting back on costly fuel.
Over the long term, BEL and BTB say reliable power is expected to attract new investment, encourage local entrepreneurship and boost economic development in the area.
The partnership is being described as an important step forward for both Belize’s tourism industry and its national energy infrastructure.
It comes as Belize heads into its high tourism season, with new airline routes set to bring more visitors to the country, including to San Pedro.
