By Belize Live News Staff: A routine bus search in San Antonio Village turned up an unusual haul: bags of vegetables tucked under the seats.
Police say MIU and HIT officers intercepted the bus on Thursday afternoon and told the driver it would be searched for illegal drugs, firearms and uncustomed goods.
Instead of contraband weapons or drugs, they found black plastic bags packed with cabbage, onions, tomatoes, sweet peppers, celery and cauliflower.
The vegetables, including nearly 200 pounds of cabbage, were confiscated and turned over to Customs.
The seizure highlights ongoing efforts to stop uncustomed produce from entering local markets, a long running concern for Belizean farmers.
