By Belize Live News Staff: Belize is moving closer to becoming a regional source of refined white sugar, with Caribbean Sugar Refinery reaffirming that its new facility remains on track for production this year.
The company is targeting its first sugar production during the third quarter of 2026, followed by full commissioning in the fourth quarter.
To prevent disruptions for businesses that rely on refined white sugar, existing waivers will continue until April 1, 2027.
Caribbean Sugar Refinery says the additional transition time will allow manufacturers and other customers across the Caribbean to adjust their purchasing schedules while the Belize facility completes quality certifications and establishes its regional logistics network.
The refinery will process raw sugar feedstock during the transition period.
The company also expects a new sugarcane crop cycle beginning by March 1, 2027, to provide additional support for regional supply.
Caribbean Sugar Refinery says establishing refined sugar production in Belize could strengthen the CARICOM Single Market and Economy by increasing trade within the Caribbean.
The company says having more refined sugar produced within the region could provide manufacturers with a more stable supply while improving their ability to compete with producers outside CARICOM.
Caribbean Sugar Refinery also pointed to potential benefits including employment, investment and stronger regional supply chains.
