By Belize Live News Staff: Police are investigating a fatal road traffic accident after a San Lazaro Village resident was found dead beneath his motorcycle near Yo Creek on Wednesday morning.
Authorities received reports shortly after 8:30 a.m. that a man was lying motionless in a roadside drain about one mile outside Yo Creek Village.
At the scene, officers reportedly found a black motorcycle and its rider near a culvert.
Police observed tire tracks extending from the location of the motorcycle toward the edge of the roadway.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the rider may have lost control while travelling toward Orange Walk Town and crashed into the culvert sometime overnight.
The victim suffered serious injuries to his face, arm and leg.
Police identified him as 40 year old Bernardo Joel Melara, a BSI employee of San Lazaro Village.
He was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital and pronounced dead.
The motorcycle has since been impounded for inspection, while police continue working to establish the exact time and circumstances of the crash.
A post mortem examination is pending.
