By Belize Live News Staff: BELMOPAN, Belize, September 15, 2026: Approximately 20,000 students across Belize are now receiving a hot meal each school day under the national school feeding programme, Prime Minister John Briceño announced.
The programme currently operates in 104 schools, including 83 primary schools and 21 secondary schools, at a reported cost of $10.4 million.
Briceño highlighted the initiative during the education section of his State of the Nation Address, arguing that students cannot be expected to learn effectively while hungry.
He also reported that more than 19,000 secondary students receive either full or partial financial assistance, representing about 83 percent of the country’s secondary school population.
More than 8,500 families are benefiting from that support, with Government investing more than $16 million in financial assistance this year.
Internet access has also been made available to 283 schools, reaching more than 78,000 students and 4,500 teachers.
According to the Prime Minister, total enrolment from pre-primary through university now stands at 101,506 students across 646 institutions, supported by 6,044 teachers.
