By Belize Live News Staff: Belize Electricity Limited says its new emergency generation units at Westlake have reached approximately 40 percent of their planned capacity as the company continues testing and commissioning the facility.
The additional generation has already been called upon to support Belize’s electricity system.
According to BEL, electricity imports from Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad were unavailable during certain periods over the past two days.
BEL says the Westlake units provided additional local generation during those periods, helping the company maintain electricity supply without resorting to load shedding.
The development comes as BEL works to increase the amount of emergency generating capacity available locally when imported electricity or other sources of supply are interrupted.
More units are expected to be brought online as testing progresses.
When the commissioning process is completed, the Westlake facility is expected to have 20 MW of emergency generation capacity.
BEL says the project will provide the national grid with additional support and flexibility during interruptions in electricity supply.
