By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Bus Association (BBA) is asking senators to hit pause before they finalize and vote on the Public Transportation Bill.
In a letter circulated to senators this morning, the BBA requested a delay and an urgent closed meeting to give operators a chance to weigh in before final amendments are made.
The bill came before the Senate last Thursday, but that sitting was suspended after midnight. Debate is set to resume today at 3:30pm in a hybrid format.
The association’s key demands include:
Equal tax concessions for all bus operators, not only the National Bus Company (NBC).
An independent audit of NBC’s current finances.
Disclosure by senators of any financial conflicts of interest.
An end to preferential approvals for road service permits.
Formal BBA representation on the Transport Board.
On Tuesday afternoon in Belmopan, BBA representatives met with Tony Novelo, Labour Senator Glenfield Dennison and Public Service Union President Dean Flowers to discuss their concerns.
