By Belize Live News Staff: Aaron Gamboa and the Special Patrol Unit became the same thing over 11 years. That was part of the problem, and part of the reason he is being praised on the way out.
Minister of Home Affairs Julius Espat spoke about the transfer for the first time, telling 7 News it came down to management rather than any failing.
“He has, you know, over the many years made the unit synonymous with himself,” Espat said. “And you know that he certainly made it rough and ready and responsive as an outgrowth of his own personality, which I have a lot of respect for that.”
Then came the line that framed the whole thing.
“But at the same time, obviously, as the man said, nobody noh put you to turn stone eena the job, right?”
Espat noted that Gamboa has been officially retired for around six months and was working on an extension. The Commissioner recommended a move to a more administrative role.
He also made a point about himself.
“The Police Department cannot be run by one person, and I am here temporarily.”
Was 11 years too long in one command?
