By Belize Live News Staff: Belize Electricity Limited has put it in writing. The country does not have enough generation capacity to meet demand over the next twelve months.
In a letter dated August 26 to Public Utilities Commission Chairman Dean Molina, BEL Executive Chairman Ambassador Lynn Young formally notified the PUC of an anticipated material shortfall in generation services.
The analysis behind it, set out in an exhibit attached to the notice, shows expected peak demand exceeding available capacity within the next year.
BEL is now asking the PUC to seek government approval to declare an emergency, which would open the door to emergency generation procurement.
The legal basis is Section 19 of the Public Utilities Commission Request for Proposals Regulations, 2024, which allows the Commission to declare an emergency situation beyond the reasonable control of Belize when the single buyer flags a shortfall within twelve months.
The notice follows a countrywide blackout on August 25 and load shedding on August 27, both linked to reduced supply from Mexico.
