By Belize Live News Staff: A Cayo man was found dead in the Macal River on Sunday following reports of a person jumping off the Hawksworth Bridge early Saturday morning.
Berly Thompson, who was last seen returning from the Benque Fiesta on Friday night, was reported missing early Saturday. His body was discovered floating in the Macal River the following day.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero stated, “On Sunday police responded to reports that a body was seen floating in the Macal River. Police retrieved the body of a male person, identified as Berly Thompson of Cayo. Information indicates that Berly Thompson had been reported missing the night prior to the discovery of his body.”
A police report was filed at 3:49 am on Saturday, describing a male person jumping off the Hawksworth bridge. This led Thompson’s family to search the river, where they found his body approximately 200 yards from the bridge.
Investigations are ongoing.
