By Belize Live News Staff: The lights went out in Punta Gorda, and the room stayed full.
The Magical History Tour opened this week in Peini, drawing students, community leaders and residents to the Welcome Center and House of Culture for a conversation about how Belize became independent.
Leading it is Dr. Assad Shoman, historian, diplomat, and one of the figures who lived through the independence struggle himself. He was joined by Dr. Filiberto Penados.
Earlier that day the pair were at Julian Cho Technical High School, pushing students to think critically about the history they are taught.
The framing of the tour is deliberate. Independence was not handed over. It was fought for, negotiated, and defended, and the work of decolonization did not end in 1981.
The tour is now on the road, with Dangriga Town next on August 28.
