Teen escapes custody in Bella Vista, police handcuffs vanish

By Belize Live News Staff: The escape lasted one night. The handcuffs, as far as anyone can tell, are still out there.

The Belize Police Department reports that officers patrolling Bella Vista on Thursday evening, August 13, 2026, spotted a familiar face, a teen wanted for theft, and made the arrest by the book: report explained, caution given, cuffs on. And because the detainee is 17, the book had one more requirement. A minor in custody needs a parent, so the officers drove him to his mother’s residence to bring her along to the station.

That decency, like the loosened handcuffs in another recent case from the very same station, became the head start. At his mother’s gate, the teen jumped from the police mobile and vanished into the village, corporal’s handcuffs and all. The evening chase came up empty.

The morning did not. At 10:00 a.m. Friday, police found him exactly where teenage fugitives are usually found, at home, and the recapture came with one mystery attached: the handcuffs were gone from his person, and asked where they went, he could offer no account of them.

Back at the Bella Vista station, the juvenile process picked up where it left off, acknowledgement form read and signed, his mother signing as witness, and on Saturday morning the formal charges landed: theft, the matter he was wanted for all along, and escaping from lawful custody, the matter he manufactured at his mother’s gate. As a minor, he is not named here, and he is presumed innocent unless and until the court decides otherwise.

Keep the running tally, because it is becoming a genre. Orange Walk’s station compound sprint in June, recaptured in August. Bella Vista’s bar-night recapture on Friday. And now Bella Vista again, a handcuffed teen over the side of the police mobile, back in custody within eighteen hours. Three escapes, three recaptures, three extra charges nobody needed, and the score for the fugitives stands at nothing gained.

The lesson for the village’s young and restless writes itself: the run always ends, usually at your own address, and the only things that stay free are the handcuffs.
