By Belize Live News Staff: The handcuffs were too tight, she said. An officer, doing the decent thing, loosened them. The cell block was full of male detainees, so, doing the proper thing, police sat her on a chair instead while the paperwork came together.
Decency and procedure, it turns out, make a fine head start.
The Belize Police Department reports that on Saturday evening, August 1, 2026, the woman, in custody at the Bella Vista Police Sub Station for possession of a controlled drug and possession of a pipe, charges not yet laid, rose from that chair at about 6:40 p.m. and ran straight out of the police station. Officers gave chase and lost her in the bushes, and Bella Vista’s quietest manhunt began.
It ended the way village manhunts usually do, not with a raid, but with a night out. On Friday, August 14, an officer spotted her at a bar in the village, and the two-week run closed over whatever was playing on the speakers. She was apprehended, detained, and walked back into the station she had sprinted out of.
By 6:30 the next morning, the formal charge was sworn: Riccy Bonilla, 32, unemployed, of Bella Vista Village, arrested and charged with escaping from lawful custody. She is, as with anyone charged, presumed innocent unless and until the court rules otherwise, and the drug and pipe matters that started it all remain uncharged for now, their turn still to come.
Regular readers will feel the echo. Just last week this page carried the Orange Walk version, a young woman who bolted from that station’s compound in June and was recaptured in August, and now the south has matched it almost beat for beat. Two stations, two escapes before charges, two runs measured in weeks, two recaptures, and two charge sheets that now carry an offence neither woman faced when she was first sitting in custody.
The moral holds from north to south: the station door may be outrun, but the village never is. Everybody knows everybody, every bar has eyes, and the law’s patience runs longer than any pair of legs. The chair she left behind is still there, and this time, the paperwork got finished.
