He spent August, through no fault of his own, as the face of 369 kilograms of cocaine.
Ecuadorian police made the discovery on the Pan-American Highway near the Colombian border. An anonymous tip early Tuesday pointed agents at a suspicious truck, and the search found the classic setup, a false bottom, and inside it, 370 green rectangular packages, 813 pounds of cocaine, each one wearing a sticker of the golden-haired striker’s grinning face. It’s a trademark for an industry that can’t exactly register one. Haaland now joins distinguished company: Lionel Messi’s image has already turned up on another seized package. Score enough goals, apparently, and the underworld makes you a logo without asking.
The arrest went to the driver, a woman police identified only as María R., carrying Colombian identity documents, taken in the Guagua Negro area near Tulcan. The economics went on full display: a shipment worth $842,000 in Ecuador becomes $11 million in the United States and nearly $20 million in Europe, the markup that keeps the whole bloody machine turning.
And here’s where the story stops being funny and starts being familiar. Ecuador is the hemisphere’s warehouse, police there seized 215 tons last year alone, and the product moves north through Central American routes, the same regional corridors this part of the world knows too well. The trade whose big shipments wear World Cup stars in Ecuador is the same trade whose small change keeps turning up between palm trees and under old vehicles right here in Belize.
Haaland scored seven times in July. The cartels, in their own twisted way, just made him their star signing. He’d surely prefer the billboards.
