By Belize Live News Staff: It takes a certain kind of moment for a lifelong party man to tell his own supporters no. Alberto August just had one, in public, on his own page.
“Many persons are asking me to help save the United Democratic Party and to assist in its return to government,” the veteran UDP figure wrote Wednesday. His answer was not the one the party faithful wanted: “I am not interested in saving any political party. My focus is on saving Belize from politicians.”
Read that line again, because it cuts both ways by design. August did not spare his own side, writing that many in the UDP, “if elected to government, will do the same or maybe even worse” than what he says the PUP is doing to the country. In one paragraph, a man asked to be a party’s lifeline instead indicted the whole political class.
What does he want instead? In his words: “a system that will rid the nation of persons in governance who see politics as a get rich scheme. A system that will attract true leaders instead of politicians.”
The timing gives the post extra charge. This is the same August who days ago demanded answers from the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister on the Montreal diplomat matter, and got a government statement and an immunity waiver within a day. He is, at minimum, a man who currently has the country’s ear.
What he has not said is just as loud. No new party announced. No UDP resignation declared. No blueprint for the system he describes. Whether this is the seed of a new movement, a bargaining position inside a struggling opposition, or simply frustration finding its voice, only August knows, and he is not saying yet.
So the floor is yours, Belize. Is August right that the problem is politicians on all sides, and would you back a movement built on that idea? Sound off below.
