Milagro Garel did hers in hospital corridors, paperwork, phone calls at odd hours, whatever it took to get a sick Belizean child to the surgery or specialist that would save them. For twenty years as World Pediatrics Country Director in Belize, she moved mountains so families would not have to face the impossible alone.
Last week, her organization celebrated that milestone. This week, everything changed.
On July 28, Milagro suffered a stroke caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm. The specialized neurosurgical care she urgently needs does not exist in Belize, so she was rushed to Guatemala, where she remains in critical condition. The cruel echo is impossible to miss: the journey she arranged for so many children, out of the country, toward the care that could save a life, is now her own.
Her family and friends have opened a GoFundMe, Support Milagro Garel’s Emergency Medical Care, to help cover the transportation, surgery, intensive care and hospitalization that a crisis like this demands. World Pediatrics is sharing the appeal in support of its beloved colleague, while noting the fundraiser is independently organized by her family and friends, who are managing all donations.
So here is the ask, Belize, and it is a simple one. If Milagro’s work ever touched your family, your village, or a child you know, or if you simply believe helpers deserve help, give what you can, share the campaign, and keep her and her family in your prayers.
She never asked the families she helped where the money would come from. She just found a way. It is our turn to find one for her.
