The message came into our newsroom Friday morning from a distressed resident of Lord’s Bank Village: a horse lay dead in the BDF housing area on Nim Li Punit Street, and according to the resident, it did not die naturally.
The resident alleges that young men in the village have been taking people’s horses and abusing them, and that this animal was mistreated through the night until it died. Photographs shared with us show the horse in the grass with grave injuries. It is an ugly sight, and behind it sits an uglier question about how the animal came to this end.
To be fair to all: these are one resident’s allegations, no official cause of death has been established, and nobody has been identified or charged. A proper examination by the authorities is exactly what the situation needs, and it is what the resident is pleading for, along with an answer to the immediate problem every rural Belizean will understand: who removes a dead horse from a residential yard before it becomes a health hazard?
Horses in villages like Lord’s Bank are not luxuries. They are transport, they are work, and for many families they are the difference between earning and not. If animals are truly being taken and brutalized, the community deserves an investigation before another one turns up dead.
