Martinez in Taipei: Taiwan is Belize’s most trusted partner

By Belize Live News Staff: Half a world from Belmopan, Belize’s economic agenda commanded a Taipei luncheon table this week, and left with promises that touch everything from the buses Belizeans may one day ride to the crops the country’s farms will grow.

Taiwan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi hosted Minister of State Osmond Martinez of the Ministry of Economic Transformation and the ministry’s CEO Carlos Pol on July 29, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a meeting equal parts celebration and business.

The celebration honoured a 37-year friendship. Chen grounded the relationship in shared values, freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights, and thanked Belize for its steady support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, the diplomatic backing Belize has provided for decades. He also singled out Martinez’s work implementing Prime Minister John Briceño’s policies, notably the debt-for-nature Blue Bonds strengthening Belize’s fiscal position.

The business filled the rest of the agenda, and the list reads like a development wish list: carbon credits, electric buses, medical care, public health, smart agriculture, sustainable tourism, and talent cultivation, all named by Chen as areas where Taiwan intends to expand cooperation with Belize, in service of the ally’s competitiveness and sustainable development.

Martinez answered with the line that will travel home: Taiwan is Belize’s most important and trusted partner. He thanked Taipei for long-term, across-the-board development assistance and looked ahead to deeper economic, investment, and trade ties.

The guest list backed the words with financial muscle. Taiwan’s Agriculture, Environment, and Finance ministries sent senior officials, joined by the Export-Import Bank, the International Cooperation and Development Fund, and the Latin American and Caribbean Trade Office, with discussions ranging across cooperation within the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, financial mutual assistance mechanisms, and fresh trade and business opportunities.

Belizeans have seen the partnership’s ground game all month, the Taiwan Technical Mission stood among the partners launching the Belize MOVES health initiative just days ago. The Taipei talks show the summit level moving in step.

Thirty-seven years in, the Belize-Taiwan story keeps adding chapters, and this week’s was written over lunch in Taipei, with Belize’s development agenda holding the seat of honour.
