By Belize Live News Staff: A routine patrol through Bella Vista Village ended with a teenager in a holding cell, after police say a stop and search produced a piece of suspected crack cocaine from his hoodie pocket.
The Belize Police Department reports that officers on mobile patrol in the Catacama area of the Toledo District village stopped the young man at about 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The search that followed, according to police, turned up a rocky substance suspected to be crack cocaine.
He was taken to the Bella Vista police substation along with the find, which was weighed in his presence, though the report does not state the quantity.
The detainee is just 17 years old, unemployed, and a resident of the village. Because he is a minor and no charge has been laid, his name is not being published, and it will stay that way.
The stop formed part of a busy day for southern police, who also executed a drug search warrant in Independence Village, Stann Creek, hours later.
The law will take its course on the substance in the pocket. The bigger question belongs to everyone else: what reaches a 17-year-old in a small southern village first, opportunity or the streets?
