Political dreams derailed: candidate quits race over police report

By Belize Live News Staff: A political campaign in Corozal Town has ended before it truly began. Tomas Zetina, an aspiring People’s United Party councillor candidate, has withdrawn from the party’s municipal convention, announcing his exit in a Facebook statement and citing a matter now before the courts, a matter built on allegations he insists are untrue.

The allegations trace to a Sunday night drive home. According to a police report, a 28-year-old woman stated that she, Zetina, and her cousin were returning from Chetumal when Zetina allegedly turned aggressive, and that while passing the Mexican Immigration Building near the Belize Northern Border, he allegedly threatened the occupants of the vehicle.

The report goes further, alleging that when the woman tried to calm him, Zetina grabbed her left forearm, causing pain, before pushing her hand away. The vehicle, it states, later stopped at a Corozal parking lot, where the other passenger got out.

Zetina’s response has been categorical. In his public statement, he maintains his innocence and says he believes the allegations against him are untrue, framing his withdrawal as a step aside while the court process runs, not a concession of anything.

Beyond that statement, neither party has spoken publicly, with the matter pending before the court.

The fallout is nonetheless real. With municipal elections approaching in March 2027, the PUP’s Corozal Town slate now has a gap where a candidacy stood, and the party has yet to comment on the development.
