The Maya are still shaping Belize’s forests more than 1,000 years later

By Belize Live News Staff: Walk into old growth rainforest in Belize and it looks like nature untouched.

New research says it is not.

Scientists using LiDAR, which fires laser pulses to map landscapes and vegetation, have found that parts of Belize’s mature forest still carry the imprint of ancient Maya land use.

The way they did it is clever. They compared the shape of the living forest above ground with Maya remains hidden beneath it, buildings and canals that have been swallowed by vegetation for centuries.

What they found is that the trees themselves still show it. Canopy height and leaf density vary in ways that track with where the Maya built, farmed and moved water.

That is a long shadow. The civilization declined more than a thousand years ago, and the forest is still growing to a pattern they set.

It also raises a question worth sitting with. If our old growth forest was shaped by people, what does untouched wilderness actually mean here?

For conservation, the researchers argue it means protecting biodiversity and cultural heritage as one thing rather than two.

Our forests are not just habitat. They are a record.
