By Belize Live News Staff: A 15-year-old girl, accompanied by a social worker, has reported to Orange Walk police that she was sexually abused as a child, prompting an investigation into the historical matter.
The Belize Police Department reports that the teen made the report at the Orange Walk Police Station, stating that the abuse occurred back in 2018, when she was just eight years old. She told police the incident took place at a family home and involved a male relative, who fled when another family member returned to the residence.
Officers recorded statements from the complainant and a relative, and a medical examination was carried out. Police have identified a man they wish to speak with, and the investigation is ongoing. No one has been charged at this stage.
In line with standard practice protecting minors and victims of sexual offences, no identifying details of the complainant or her family are being published.
Her decision to come forward, years after the fact and with the support of a social worker, reflects real courage, and it carries a message for others. Survivors of sexual abuse, whether the harm was recent or long ago, are encouraged to report to police or seek support through the Department of Human Services or a trusted organization. It is never too late to be heard, and support is available.
