Guinea Grass man charged with drug possession

By Belize Live News Staff: A night patrol through Guinea Grass Village has ended with a 58-year-old man charged over one of the smallest drug finds you will see reported, 0.07 grams of suspected crack cocaine.

The Belize Police Department says that on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at around 8:20 p.m., officers patrolling the Orange Walk District village approached a man walking along an unnamed street and advised him he would be searched.

The search, according to police, turned up a piece of a white substance believed to be crack cocaine in the front pocket of his cargo shorts. He was arrested on the spot, cautioned, informed of his rights, and taken to the Orange Walk Police Station, with police noting the street was well lit at the time.

At the station, the man was identified as Andres Celestino Batun, a labourer of Guinea Grass Village. The suspected drug was weighed in front of him, coming in at a gross weight of 0.07 grams, then sealed with evidence tape, labelled, and passed to the exhibit keeper.

Batun was formally charged with possession of a controlled drug. Cautioned once more, he chose to remain silent.
