Loitering lands man before the court

By Belize Live News Staff: A man is set to appear in court on a loitering charge after police said he refused to leave an area in Bella Vista Village, Toledo District.

The Belize Police Department reports that on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at about 4:05 p.m., officers conducting a motorcycle patrol noticed a group of men gathered under the verandah of a building along a street in the village. Officers approached and advised the group to move along.

Most of the men reportedly began to leave, but one declined, insisting that he was doing nothing wrong and was not a bad person. According to police, he was informed that he had committed the offence of loitering, and was arrested and taken to the Bella Vista Police Station.

At the station, he was identified as 30-year-old Ede Nilson Antonio Clavel, a Belizean labourer of Bladen Village. He was charged with loitering, granted police bail, and is due to appear at the Punta Gorda Magistrate Court on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

It is worth noting that Clavel, like anyone facing a charge, is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty before the court.
