Chang: Respecting ancestry doesn’t mean agreeing with Beijing

By Belize Live News Staff: The fallout from China’s sanctions on Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca has spilled into a debate about identity and loyalty, and Lee Mark Chang is making his position clear.

The Mesopotamia Area Representative responded after the page Belize NOW questioned whether he would side with Belize or China.

Chang said he is proud of his Chinese heritage but that his loyalty belongs to Belize. He said he respects Belize’s relationship with Taiwan, as well as China and its people, but that respecting his roots does not require him to support the Chinese government’s positions.

He also suggested the page should focus on its own affairs before questioning another person’s loyalty to the country.

“I was born a Belizean,” Chang wrote, adding that his record as a businessman, former Senate President and current Area Representative speaks for itself.

His comments come after China sanctioned Fonseca over Belize’s ties with Taiwan, prompting the Government of Belize to reject the measures and Taiwan to thank Belize for standing firm.

“No Facebook post will change that,” Chang said.
