By Belize Live News Staff: The book has closed on the criminal case against Mr. Alberto August, after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) directed that the prosecution be discontinued.
In a release, the Belize Police Department said it received a memorandum from the Office of the DPP on June 30, 2026, concerning the proceedings against August, which had stemmed from a complaint made by Hon. Oscar Mira. After reviewing the case file, the DPP directed that the matter be discontinued, and the police confirmed they would act accordingly. Any property held during the investigation is to be returned to its rightful owner or owners.
The development marks the end of a case that had been closely followed by the public. August had been charged under the Cybercrime Act, in a matter many had linked to the wider controversy involving Mira.
The conclusion comes after acting Minister of Home Affairs Julius Espat stepped in earlier to send the file to the DPP, rather than leaving it to be handled as an internal police matter. Espat had stressed at the time that the case should be decided independently by the office constitutionally responsible for prosecutions. The DPP’s directive to discontinue the matter now sees that process run its full course.
