By Belize Live News Staff: The death of 45-year-old Oscar Genaro Flota has left many questions unanswered as police continue investigating what began as a dispute among a group of men in Caye Caulker.
According to investigators, Flota was socializing with several individuals on Saturday night when an argument reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation. During the altercation, Flota was struck in the head with a shovel and later died from his injuries despite being transported for medical treatment.
Authorities explain that investigators must first determine whether there was intent to kill, whether excessive force was used, or whether any claims of self-defense may have played a role in the confrontation.
Police have confirmed that they are searching for a male suspect and that statements collected so far indicate a physical altercation occurred before the fatal injury.
As investigators continue gathering evidence and reviewing witness statements, Flota’s family is left mourning the loss of a loved one while awaiting answers about exactly what happened during the fatal confrontation.
Police say the investigation remains active and additional information is expected as detectives work to determine whether criminal charges will be brought against the suspect being sought.
