The World Cup kicks off today — here’s what Belizeans need to know

By Belize Live News Staff: The biggest sporting event on the planet officially kicks off today, and football fans across Belize are already choosing which teams they will support over the next six weeks.

With Belize absent from the tournament, many local fans traditionally adopt a second team, and this year is expected to be no different.

Mexico is likely to receive strong support from Belizeans because of the close ties between the two countries and its status as one of the tournament’s host nations. Others are expected to rally behind defending champions Argentina, led by football legend Lionel Messi, who is playing in what could be his final World Cup appearance.

Brazil enters the tournament once again as one of the favorites, while France hopes to capture another title behind superstar Kylian Mbappé. England, Germany, Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands are also expected to attract large followings among Belizean football fans.

One player attracting global attention is Spain’s 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal. Many analysts believe he could emerge as one of the stars of the tournament and help lead Spain on a deep World Cup run.

This year’s World Cup is unlike any before it. A record 48 countries are participating, creating more matches, more upsets, and more opportunities for smaller nations to make history.

The expanded format also means fans will be treated to 104 matches before a champion is crowned on July 19.

Across Belize, televisions will be turned on early, offices will be buzzing with football conversations, and social media will be flooded with predictions as World Cup fever takes hold.

One thing is certain: for the next month and a half, football will dominate conversations from Corozal to Punta Gorda as Belizeans join billions around the world in celebrating the beautiful game.
