Penner under investigation over removal of explosive materials

By Belize Live News Staff: Police say they are currently investigating whether criminal charges could be brought against former minister Elvin Penner following allegations involving the removal of explosive materials from a restricted military operation area.

During a media briefing, ASP Stacy Smith confirmed that investigators have received a report along with two statements relating to the incident. According to Smith, the matter is now being reviewed in connection with Belize’s dangerous goods laws.

Officials say investigators are examining whether any criminal offences may have been committed before determining if charges will be filed. Police have not yet disclosed the exact nature of the possible offences under review.

The investigation follows reports that Penner was allegedly found with explosive-related materials removed from an active military cleanup operation. Penner has since publicly defended his actions, claiming he acted out of concern for public safety and a nearby fire threatening the area.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
