By Belize Live News Staff: A nationwide audit ordered by Commissioner of Police Richard Rosado has uncovered major inconsistencies in the investigation surrounding twenty-one thousand dollars reported missing from police custody.
According to information obtained by BLN, investigators now believe the money may never have made it into the exhibit room at the Queen Street Police Station, despite earlier reports suggesting the cash disappeared from the secure storage facility.
Sources say auditors found no official documentation confirming the money was ever logged into the evidence vault after it was seized during a criminal investigation in 2023. The discovery has now shifted the investigation back to the Belize City Crimes Investigation Branch office, where authorities suspect the funds may have gone missing shortly after being confiscated.
The missing cash reportedly should have been entered into the department’s evidence management system before being transferred to secure storage. However, investigators say there is currently no paper trail confirming that process was ever completed.
The findings have sparked serious concerns within the Ministry of Home Affairs over accountability and the handling of police exhibits. Officials are now attempting to determine who last had possession of the funds and whether established procedures were ignored.
The audit is the first large-scale internal review initiated under Commissioner Rosado’s leadership and forms part of a broader effort to strengthen transparency and oversight within the Belize Police Department.
