By Belize Live News Staff: The Department of the Environment (DOE), in collaboration with the Pesticides Control Board, is conducting an active investigation following a chemical spill along the George Price Highway near Mile 60.
The incident occurred late on April 1, 2026, when a cargo truck reportedly overturned, releasing several gallons of insecticides, including Bifen and Permethrin, onto the roadway and surrounding area.
Authorities have since carried out an on-site assessment to evaluate the environmental impact and ensure proper containment of the affected area. Contaminated soil has been collected as part of efforts to prevent further spread of the chemicals.
Investigators are also working to determine the ownership of the cargo and whether all required permits were secured for the transport and importation of the substances. Officials say further evaluations are ongoing to decide on safe disposal or treatment methods for the contaminated materials.
The DOE continues to monitor the situation closely as part of its mandate to protect Belize’s environment and public safety.
