UDP calls rising violence a national emergency

Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton demands transparency on proposed telecom acquisition

By Belize Live News Staff: The United Democratic Party is calling for immediate and decisive action to address Belize’s escalating crime situation, urging that public safety be treated as a national priority above politics.

In a strongly worded statement, Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton said the country is facing an urgent crisis that demands transparency, measurable outcomes, and real enforcement. She warned that repeated acts of violence signal a failure to deter criminal behavior and erode public confidence.

Panton reaffirmed that the UDP is ready to engage in a bipartisan approach to tackling crime, emphasizing that protecting lives and livelihoods must come before political differences. She said the opposition will continue pressing for answers and accountability while pushing for solutions that deliver real security to Belizeans.

“The protection of Belizean lives is not optional,” Panton said. “It is the first duty of the State.”
