ATM, Barton Creek, Nohoch Che’en temporarily closed amid high river conditions

ATM, Barton Creek, Nohoch Che’en temporarily closed amid high river conditions

By Belize Live News Staff: The Institute of Archaeology (IA) issued an urgent advisory early Saturday morning, December 27, 2025, announcing the temporary closure of several major archaeological reserves due to unsafe river conditions.

According to the IA, as of 5:30 a.m., the Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve, including its iconic hand-cranked ferry, has been officially closed. Elevated river levels have made ferry crossings and access to the site unsafe for visitors.

In addition, the Institute confirmed that several other river-dependent archaeological attractions remain closed for similar reasons. These include Nohoch Che’en (Cave Tubing), Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), and Barton Creek.

The IA emphasized that the closures are strictly precautionary and are being implemented to ensure the safety of visitors, tour guides, and staff during the period of high water levels.

While these specific sites are currently inaccessible, the Institute noted that all other archaeological reserves throughout Belize remain open to the public.

The Institute of Archaeology says it will continue to closely monitor river conditions and will provide updates as water levels begin to recede. Tour operators, travelers, and members of the public are being urged to exercise caution and adjust travel plans accordingly.
