Ministry of Health assures Belizeans that national drinking water remains safe despite MICS7 concerns

By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) is reassuring the public that Belize’s drinking water remains safe, following public concern generated by the Multi Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 7, which reported the presence of E. coli in some water samples. In a detailed statement issued today, the Ministry emphasized that its own extensive data, drawn from systematic testing across multiple sites and over long periods, shows that potable water across the country continues to meet safety standards.

According to the Ministry, Belize carries out one of the most thorough water quality monitoring programs in the region. Routine testing is conducted for microbial contaminants—including E. coli, total coliforms, and other indicators—to ensure early detection of waterborne risks. These analyses follow strict internationally recognized procedures for collecting, preserving, and transporting samples, ensuring data accuracy and reliability.

The Ministry highlighted its compliance with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and national regulations, noting that its monitoring program includes:

Monthly sampling in 16 Belize Water Services systems

Monthly and quarterly sampling across 110 rudimentary water systems

Monthly testing at 105 bottled and purified water operations

Analysis of water from remaining handpump systems

In total, approximately 4,000 water samples are processed annually.

The Ministry says that when isolated issues arise, immediate corrective actions are taken in coordination with water authorities and municipal partners. Belizeans are encouraged to remain confident in their drinking water and rely on official communication channels for accurate information.
