Tourism businesses fear major losses as Secret Beach access road becomes nearly impassable

By Belize Live News Staff: Stakeholders on North Ambergris Caye are sounding the alarm over the rapidly declining condition of the road leading to Secret Beach, a popular destination for tourists and a major economic hub for the island. With high season now underway, residents say the road’s current state threatens both tourism revenue and public safety.

The main access road is riddled with deep potholes filled with water, making it difficult for golf carts, taxis, and delivery vehicles to pass. Business owners report that tourists are increasingly unwilling to travel north under these conditions, which they fear could significantly reduce foot traffic to restaurants, bars, beach clubs, and other establishments that depend heavily on seasonal tourism.

Beyond the economic impact, residents highlight the serious emergency-response challenges the road now presents. Firefighters, police, and medical responders may face delays reaching people in distress, an issue that could have life-threatening consequences for both locals and visitors.

Compounding the concern is the absence of street lighting along the stretch, leaving drivers to navigate deep potholes and standing water in complete darkness.

Residents are appealing for urgent intervention, saying the road has reached a breaking point and needs immediate repair to prevent further damage to the community and its local economy.
