By Belize Live News Staff: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami continues to issue advisories on Hurricane Melissa, currently located between the central Bahamas and Bermuda. The system is moving north-northeast at 21 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour.
As of 5:00 a.m. EDT, hurricane conditions are expected to reach Bermuda tonight, while tropical storm-force winds will begin affecting the island later today. Authorities in Bermuda have urged residents to complete all final preparations ahead of the storm’s arrival.
According to the NHC, flooding across the Bahamas is subsiding, while lingering flood conditions across Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola are expected to continue for a few more days. Residents in affected areas are being advised to remain cautious and follow official safety guidance.
In its 8:00 a.m. Tropical Weather Outlook, the NHC confirmed that no tropical cyclone formation is expected across the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico over the next seven days. This means Hurricane Melissa poses no threat to Belize or the wider mainland Caribbean region.
Forecaster Hagen from the NHC emphasized post-storm safety measures, urging the public to ensure proper ventilation for generators to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and to stay hydrated during clean-up operations.
Meanwhile, Belize’s local forecast remains mostly fair and mild, with only isolated showers expected over southern districts tonight.
