By Belize Live News Staff: The National Meteorological Service of Belize reports that a moderate north to northwesterly airflow continues to influence the country, maintaining mostly fair weather conditions today. Skies will be sunny with cloudy spells this morning, while a few showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop around the country later this evening. The activity will gradually decrease tonight and linger mainly over offshore areas into early Thursday morning.
Winds will blow from the north to northwest at 10 to 20 knots, and sea conditions will remain moderate with wave heights between four and six feet. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach highs of 85 degrees Fahrenheit along the coast, 88 inland, and 77 over the hills. Tonight will be cooler, with lows of 74 degrees along the coast, 70 inland, and 65 in the higher elevations.
At 6:00 a.m., Hurricane Melissa, now downgraded to a Category 2 storm, was located near latitude 20.6 North and longitude 75.7 West, or about 45 miles northwest of Guantánamo, Cuba. The system was moving toward the north-northeast at 14 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds near 105 miles per hour. The Met Service says Melissa poses no threat to Belize as it continues to move away from the region.
The extended forecast for Thursday and Thursday night calls for generally cloudy skies with a few isolated showers or periods of light rain, especially with the approach of a cold front. According to forecaster Crystal Rosalez, fair weather is expected to persist for most of today before moisture increases later in the evening.
