By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize has approved bold new measures to transform the nation’s transport system, focusing on safety, enforcement, and modernization.
Under the leadership of the Ministry of Constitution and Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs, and Transportation, Cabinet has endorsed a comprehensive plan that includes legislative reforms, major infrastructure investments, and stricter enforcement protocols, all expected to take effect by November 2025.
Among the most significant changes are mandatory motorcycle training and certification, stronger laws against drunk driving, and regulations for tinted vehicles to improve road visibility. The reforms will also ensure fair trade for Belizean truck operators and clarify dealer licensing for both vehicles and motorcycles.
Cabinet also approved BZ$2 million to rehabilitate the Belize City (Pound Yard) and Belmopan bus terminals, bringing them up to modern standards for accessibility, safety, and passenger comfort.
In addition, 35 transport officers have begun specialized traffic enforcement training at the National Police Training Academy, a first-of-its-kind program designed to boost compliance, accountability, and professionalism across the transport sector.
Officials say the initiative marks a turning point in the effort to save lives and create a safer, fairer, and more efficient road network for all Belizeans.
