By Belize Live News Staff: The Belmopan community is expressing outrage after two newly installed stadium lights were stolen from Las Flores Field, just months after major upgrades funded through the office of Area Representative Oscar Mira.
The theft, which Mira described as “unacceptable and utterly disappointing,” has sparked a police investigation. According to the area representative, the person who carried out the crime appeared to be skilled in electrical work and likely had experience climbing poles.
Mira urged the public to come forward with any information, noting that such acts undermine community development efforts aimed at supporting youth and sports programs.
“This was something positive we did for our young people, and it’s heartbreaking to see it destroyed by selfish acts,” Mira said in a statement. “Return the lights. They belong to the people of Belmopan.”
The installation of stadium lights at several fields last year was seen as a major improvement for local sports and recreation in the city. Now, Mira says, the community is being forced to deal with the consequences of what appears to be a targeted and deliberate theft.
